Experience all-day thrills and high-speed action! Killarney brings you the first Extreme Festival of the year on Saturday 16 March 2024, featuring all the top racing categories!
The Extreme Supercars Driven by Dunlop are always a crowd favourite every time the Extreme Festival comes to Killarney, featuring iconic names such as Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche – with a few hot BMWs and Nissan GTRs to lend even more spice to the mix. These cars lap the 3.3km Killarney circuit in a very quick 1minute 7.7 seconds, averaging 175km/h through Killarney’s four tight corners, two kinks and the double apex Sarel’s Sweep. That’s less than a second outside the ultimate lap record, set in a Ginetta LMP2 car!
The new SA Touring Car & SATC SupaCup category takes over from the former Global Touring Car classes as South Africa’s premier wings and slicks tin-top race series, with new, more robust chassis and upgraded drivetrains.
Featuring Toyota Corollas, BMW 328tis and Volkswagen Golfs in the Touring Car line-up, the racing is expected to be fierce. In addition, the SupaCup category is no longer a one-make series as the Volkswagen Polos are joined by a radically tuned Toyota Starlet hatchback.
The SA Touring Car entry includes two Killarney hotshots – Andrew Rackstaw in the RDSA/Sparco Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI and Julian van der Watt, driving a Chemical Logistics Toyota Corolla.
Andrew is already a Touring Cars race winner here at Killarney, and Julian came very close to a fairytale maiden win at home in September 2023. They’ll want to make the most of their home track advantage and give local fans something to cheer about on 16 March. Charl Visser brought home the 2023 Compcare Polo Cup title as well as the Senior Max Karting Championship and scored a ‘works’ drive in the SATC SupaCup series. He is quite capable of causing an upset in the opening round.
The Polo Cup includes the new over 50’s Master Class and the youth versus experience battle will be worth watching. Durbanville youngster Kyle Visser won the inaugural Volkswagen Rookies Cup and earned himself a sponsored drive in this year’s Polo Cup.
Polo Cup Racing, you’ll discover, is a contact sport. The fields are big, the majority of the drivers are young, ambitions and aggressive, and the cars are all identical. That’s a recipe for (to put it politely) very robust racing.
With no less than five local contenders in a field of close to 40 entries, the Sunbet ZX10 Masters Cup category has a distinct ‘North versus South’ flavour – look out for Killarney hotshots Trevor Westman, Piers Canute, Lubabalo Ntisana, David Enticott and Jonathan Schwerin.
Any one of them is capable of causing an upset in this hotly-contested one-make category – expect fireworks as they take on Clinton Seller, who holds the lap record at Killarney for motorcycles.
The purists will tell you that the most exacting category of circuit racing is the Investchem Formula 1600’s and Formula Ford Kent single-seaters. With open, exposed wheels the slightest touch can be disastrous and precision driving is a pre-requisite. This is not a category for sissies.
Hometown heroes on the grid are Storm Lanfear and Jason Coetzee, who finished second in the 2023 F1600 championship and will be gunning for the title this year.
The new-look GR Cup driven by Netstar features six identical Toyota GR Corollas, driven by well-known motoring journalists. Each car has a turbocharged 1.6 litre three-cylinder engine delivering 221kW and 370Nm to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Who wins depends very much on who wants it more!
Meet South Africa’s top drivers on the Fan Walks during the lunch break; with an open paddock policy, you also get an opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes, get autographs etc.
There’s also a full programme of off-track activities to keep the whole family entertained, including hot food (including Halaal) and cold drinks from a variety of outlets and vendors, live music in the beer garden, a wide range of market stalls, public karting on the Kart Circuit from 1:30pm, a fun fair with rides for children of all ages, children’s play areas, pedal karting for petrolheads-in-training and even a Gymkhana on the Castrol Spinning Pitch!
You’re also welcome to bring your picnic basket and your cooler box, light up your skottel braai or park next to one of our brick braais.
