The Provincial Department of Agriculture has confirmed it took part in the National Cannabis Master Plan Consultation Workshop held on 18th of March 2021.

The master plan aims to turn cannabis into a viable business sector for the country.

The Department says the biggest obstacle to date was obtaining licenses, which was issued at a national level by SAHPRA.

MEC Ivan Meyer says the Western Cape welcomes any new initiatives to grow the economy in the Western Cape, and which would ensure jobs and dignity to people.

He says the value chain for both medicinal cannabis and hemp should be developed/refined, to ensure that farmers as prospective growers have a well-developed value chain which ensures market access.

The Department says it’s been inundated with enquiries about medicinal cannabis and hemp and they will soon support farmers within their abilities.
