Waves of excitement flow through the air as Comic Con Cape Town comes alive! Day 1 kicked off on Freedom Day. Thousands of fans, cosplayers and comic geeks queued for over an hour before the doors even opened. The CTICC2 hosts the geek and gaming festival that includes world-class competitions, installations, exhibits and first-person encounters with Hollywood stars.

 

Comic Con Cape Town kicked off with the Hugo Lambrechts Orchestra offering their rendition of Star Wars theme songs.

Cosplayers, comics and cool swords!

This is where pop culture fans will have the most fun. The aisles are crowded with local and international stalls and exhibitors, with a display of products for every fan! Think anime action figures, artworks, Funko Pop, Demon Slayer-styled kimonos and RPG collectibles.

Make sure not to miss the Artist Alley where local and international creators share their work and experience with the crowds. Fans were most excited to see comic book artists Ian Churchill, Afua Richardson and Sean Izaakse appear at Comic Con Cape Town. They shared what it takes to become a successful illustrator, and turning your passion into a career.

 

 

Loyiso Mkhize and Clyde Beech joined the stage with Bill Masuku to bring some African flair to the day. They spoke about the importance of sharing South African stories.

 

Adding to the Main Stage chatter were the spotlight sessions with Hollywood stars Ross Marquand, Kat Graham and Tati Gabrielle.

 

 

Gaming scene at Comic Con Cape Town

The gaming (second) floor was electric! This is where all gamers need to be. Dozens of tournaments and cash prizes are up for grabs. Along with free-play areas, merchandise, more competitions and gaming tech.

The tournaments where sponsored by many, including Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) who encouraged fans to participate in the free-to play WRC and FIFA tournaments for chance to win some big prizes.

Telkom V Gaming started off Comic Con Cape Town with a 32-player FIFA tournament with a single elimination format. This competition had several opportunities to win, but the top three winners of the day had their names put into a random draw. All in hopes of winning the grand prize

For those with a passion for gaming – wanting to make it into a full-time career – the StreamerCon is where it’s at! Local streamers: RebelMonkeyZA, GoKatGo, Blumfuffski, Grizzly Gaming and TheaBesty, joined a panel discussion with share their journey in the content creation space. Prepare to learn all kinds of tips and tricks, from the best of them at Comic Con Cape Town.

 

And who could forget about the Doritos Crunch Cup stand? Gamers showed off their skills in the match , which boasted a cash prize of R7000, split amongst the top three players. Even more is on the line for the player who can beat a professional gamer at their own game!
