For many dogs in Khayelitsha, this Mandela Day will mean more than just another winter’s day. It will mean a warm, safe place to sleep.

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has announced that 134 dog kennels will be distributed to vulnerable community dogs as part of its Mandela Day campaign, giving many animals shelter after months of waiting.

The initiative is being made possible through partnerships with FOUR PAWS South Africa and the Signature of Hope Foundation, which have also contributed hundreds of care packs for pets in need.

As South Africans prepare to dedicate 67 minutes to service in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy on 18 July, Mdzananda is inviting individuals, families and businesses to spend that time visiting the clinic during its Mandela Day Open Days.

Guided tours will offer visitors a glimpse into the organisation’s work caring for sick, injured and abandoned animals, while highlighting the challenges faced by pet owners in Khayelitsha.

Fundraising and Communications Executive Marcelle du Plessis says the kennel distribution will make an immediate difference in the lives of many animals.

“Many of these dogs have been on our waiting list for months to receive a donated kennel. This Mandela Day, they will finally receive the gift of warmth, protection and comfort.”

FOUR PAWS South Africa Director Fiona Miles says the campaign demonstrates the impact of collective action.

“This campaign is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when compassion turns into action. Together with our supporters and partners, we have not only reached our goal but gone beyond it, delivering meaningful, lasting change for dogs who need it most. This is the spirit of Mandela Day brought to life.”

The campaign has exceeded its original target. While FOUR PAWS South Africa committed to providing 67 kennels and more than 670 care packs, an additional 67 kennels sponsored by the Signature of Hope Foundation have doubled the number of dogs that will benefit.

Signature of Hope Trustee Craig Featherby says the organisation is proud to support the initiative.

“We are proud that, through Signature of Hope, we can help provide safe shelter for animals in the care of this remarkable organisation.”
