A second teenager has been arrested in connection with the attack yesterday on 3 MP’s, in Philippi. Brigadier Novela Potelwa says detectives from the Western Cape serious and violent crime unit were pursuing leads yesterday, following the attack on three members of Parliament in Philippi on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chairperson of Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee, Ian Cameron, alongside 2 members of the DA, were injured in a smash and grab incident near the Philippi SAPS training academy in Philippi East yesterday afternoon. Brigadier Potelwa says detectives worked through the night and in the early hours of this morning effected the arrest of a second suspect. Potelwa says the 16-year-old who was arrested in Browns Farm and has since been charged.

The Brigadier added that the first suspect, an 18 year-old-male was taken into custody on Tuesday night as he sought medical assistance at a facility in Lentegeur in Mitchells Plain. It’s believed that he was shot during the attack on the three victims when one of the occupants in the vehicle, allegedly fired a shot in response to the attack. She says this suspect is currently under police guard in hospital.

Attempted murder and attempted hijacking charges

 

Police says that initial reports of the crime incident had indicated that the attack was perpetrated by three male suspects. She says the investigation continues. A third arrest is expected in due course. Potelwa says the suspects face attempted murder and attempted hijacking charges.

 

Presiding Officers of Parliament

 

The Presiding Officers of Parliament says the attack on MPs in Philippi yesterday has far reaching consequences. The Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, Ian Cameron, confirmed that he suffered dental damage and has a few stitches, after the vehicle he and his two colleagues were in was thrown with bricks. DA MP, Nicholas Gotsell sustained a head injury, while MP Lisa Schickerling is said to have sustained minor injuries. Parliament’s Moloto Mothapo, wished them well in their recovery.
