A Mozambican prisoner, who escaped from jail, has been arrested in South Africa. Nelson Simiao Massango is one of more than 1,000 prisoners who escaped from the Maputo Maximum prison during unrest in that country in December last year. He was arrested in Sandton this week.
Mozambican prisoner arrested in South Africa
The National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola has commended members of the SAPS Border Policing High Density Team for arresting the convicted prisoner. Reports suggest that Massango was convicted for murder in 2015 and had been sentenced to at least 20 years.

Mozambican murderer arrested in Sandton
She says the suspected fugitive of justice was taken into custody at a car hire dealership in Sandton. Officers found, upon further investigation, that he is being probed and may be linked to several cases of theft of motor vehicle in Gauteng. It’s alleged that he would rent 4×4 bakkies, smuggle them over the border into Mozambique and then sell that in his home country.
General Masemola – Don’t hide here
The Brigadier says INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau (NCB) Pretoria is engaging INTERPOL NCB Maputo on the latest developments. At the same time, General Masemola has sent a stern warning to criminals that South Africa is not a hideout for them.
