A fire in Wellington claimed the life of a woman. A blaze that erupted in New Rest-Egoli, Wellington, shortly after midnight yesterday (Sunday) morning, claimed the life of a woman, destroyed about 200 informal structures, and left many destitute.

A fire in Wellington claimed the life of a woman

Drakenstein Municipality’s Fire and Rescue Services arrived at the scene a couple of minutes after the fire was reported to the Municipality. They activated the firefighting services of Stellenbosch Municipality, which arrived 30 minutes later.
Altogether, five pumpers and three bushfire vehicles were on the scene.

Despite a howling Southeaster wind, the firefighting crews distinguished the fire at around 5:00 yesterday morning.

The Municipality extends its condolences to the family of the deceased woman.

The Municipality further expresses its disappointment in members of the community who tried to stab a Stellenbosch firefighter and slashed fire engines’ pipes. The help of the South African Police Service had to be called in to protect the firefighters and enable them to do their work.

Disaster relief is currently being coordinated for the affected residents.
