President Cyril Ramaphosa says government will immediately begin a process of consultation with relevant stakeholders on a proposal that by the end of May, most of the country be placed on alert level 3.

Addressing the nation, Ramaphosa said that those parts of the country with the highest rates of infection could remain on level 4 – depending on the outcome of consultations.

Ramaphosa says some changes will be made to Level 4 in the coming days, which will allow for some more activity to take place, including in retail, e-commerce and the reduction on exercise restrictions.

He says the virus will be part of our daily lives for a long time to come, and thus social distancing, hand hygiene and mask wearing will have to be adhered to.
