The Electoral Commission says about 780,000 votes were cast on the first day of special voting for the Local Government Elections.
This is out of the over 2.6 million voters approved to vote between Monday and Tuesday, including home visits.
3 November marks the second and final day of the special voting opportunity, with National Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo urging all who have not yet cast their special vote to do so, or to be ready at home when officials arrive.
“Voting stations will again open at 08:00 and close at 17:00. This is the final opportunity for special voting, after which voters may only be able to vote on the 4th November at the same [voting] station they are registered at,” said Mamabolo.
The second day of voting in the Cape Metro is anticipated to get off to a smoother start than Monday, with all voting stations stocked with ballot papers.
Some 217 stations got off to a delayed start due to the delayed delivery of ballots.
During an afternoon briefing on the progress of the voting, Deputy CEO of Electoral Operations Masego Sheburi said the delay relates to the reprint of ballots in line with a Constitutional Court ruling last month.

Sheburi said 33 million ballots had to be reprinted by last Friday, two days before the first ballot was crossed.
“The City of Cape Town ballots are those that were in the final run of the printing process. We can confirm that all the remaining ballots in respect of the City of Cape Town are already in decentralised storage facilities and we are increasingly distributing them to the voting stations,” said Sheburi.
