Local taxi associations Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) met on Monday to discuss resolutions to bring an end to the taxi violence which flared up in the City of Cape Town last week.

According to the Western Cape Mobility Department, both associations have agreed to take part in a process where independent facilitators will help them discuss and resolve issues affecting the minibus taxi industry. SANTACO Western Cape have indicated that it will observe the facilitation process.

Last week’s taxi violence saw heightened police visibility at several taxi-ranks and transport interchanges following deadly taxi-related shootings in Delft and Mfuleni. A taxi driver and passenger also sustained gunshot wounds following a shooting along the R300 on Thursday. Several arrests have since been made in connection with these incidents.

The Western Cape Government and City of Cape Town have welcomed the commitments made by both CATA and CODETA, after both associations committed to end the violence. As part of the agreement, stakeholders will also identify the most urgent issues to discuss this week.

The department has indicated that the parties will meet again with the Western Cape Government next Tuesday, 10 November 2026, to continue the discussions as another important step towards a lasting agreement.

Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, welcomed these commitments and called on both associations to honour them.

“Today’s meeting is a step in the right direction. But the violence must stop. This is nonnegotiable. Both associations must put down their guns and work towards a peaceful solution. Residents must be able to use public transport without fearing for their lives. We owe it to them to make this process work,” said Sileku

Sileku says the Western Cape Government and City of Cape Town will continue working together to support the discussions, enforce the law and protect residents while efforts to restore peace continue.
