Parliament is exploring ways to ease fuel prices to bring relief to South Africans.

The Standing Committee on Appropriations met on Thursday, where it adopted the Second Special Appropriations Bill. This bill proposes that Treasury withdraw R10 billion from the National Revenue Fund to allow the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources to stabilise fuel costs.

This follows an increase in fuel costs by around R3 on Wednesday.

“The Minister of Finance tabled the Bill on 31 July 2026. It was subsequently referred to the Committee on 4 August 2026 for consideration and reporting to the National Assembly,” read Parliament’s statement.

The Committee’s chairperson, Dr Mmusi Maimane, said that because the funds are available in the National Revenue Fund, consumers should receive fuel cost relief immediately.

“As Parliament and representatives of the people, we must ensure that fuel prices are reduced so that citizens can enter December with some relief,” said Maimane.

The Committee also further recommended that the Ministers in the Department of Finance and Mineral and Petroleum Resources report any potential future shocks, as well as how basic fuel price relief and levy measures would be used, to Parliament.

The National Assembly will soon consider the report and its recommendations, with a debate scheduled on the matter.
