An 8-year-old boy has drowned in the Camps Bay Tidal Pool. The boy was playing in the tidal pool on Monday evening, 5 October, when he was discovered unresponsive in the water.
He had been visiting Camps Bay with his family. The family are believed to be from Somalia, but reside in Cape Town.
The NSRI says they were alerted to a drowning in progress at 17h41.
NSRI Bakoven crew and NSRI medics, Clifton Surf Lifesaving lifeguards, CoCT lifeguards, WC Government Health EMS rescue squad, ER24 ambulance service, Community medics, CoCT Law Enforcement, the SA Police Service and Camps Bay CID responded.
The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon says on arrival on the scene, a bystander had already started CPR on the boy.
“Extensive advanced life support CPR efforts were continued, but after all efforts to resuscitate the child were exhausted, sadly the child was declared deceased by paramedics.”
The body of the child has been taken into the care of the Government Health Forensic Pathology Service, and police have opened an Inquest docket.
Meanwhile, an 18-year-old teen from Mfuleni is still missing after he was swept away at Glen Beach, Camps Bay, over the weekend.
There have been numerous drowning incidents in the past few weeks along the Western Cape coastline.
Police are also probing the discovery of an unidentified body at Strandfontein Beach yesterday. The body was in a state of decomposition, and DNA testing will be done to identify the person.
At the same time, Slade Van Der Walt has been missing for more than a month since an incident at Strand Beach.
