The shelves may be filled with books, but the Hanover Park Library has become much more than a place to read.

For half a century, the library has served as a place of learning, connection and opportunity for residents, and it is now celebrating 50 years at the heart of the community.

The City of Cape Town’s Libraries and Information Service hosted a commemorative event on Friday, 25 September 2026, bringing together community members, former staff, loyal patrons and stakeholders to celebrate the milestone.

The library has continued to adapt as the needs of the community have changed.

Alongside its traditional lending services, it now provides internet and computer access, literacy programmes, educational workshops, book clubs, skills development sessions and cultural activities.

Hanover Park Library currently has 2 308 active members and recorded 23 943 items in circulation. More than 88 000 visitors used the facility during the 2025/2026 financial year, with 576 new membership applications received.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says the library’s 50-year journey is a milestone the community can be proud of.

“We are extremely proud of this milestone and share the happiness of this moment with the community.”

She says the library has also provided children and other patrons with a safe place to explore reading and learning.

“From a small and humble beginning, the library has through the years provided a safe haven for children and patrons to enjoy reading and the many learning opportunities.”

The library’s programmes include children’s storytelling, school holiday activities, reading initiatives, heritage programmes and skills development sessions.

Higham says the people who have supported the library over the years have played an important role in its success.

“We would like to thank residents, staff members, volunteers, community partners and library users who have contributed to its success over the years.”
