Cape Town residents in several areas are being urged to prepare for possible water supply disruptions as the City carries out planned maintenance from Monday, 31 August, to Friday, 4 September.
The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate says the work forms part of ongoing maintenance of water supply infrastructure and includes pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements.
Residents in Pine Haven, Red Hill, Welcome Glen and Da Gama Park will experience lower-than-usual water pressure on Monday, 31 August, as the City adjusts the water supply. Residents have been asked to reduce their water consumption.
In part of Steenberg Golf Estate, water will be temporarily shut off from 08:00 to 17:00 on Monday. The affected erven are along Charnwood Avenue, the Hotel and possibly adjacent erven. The shutdown will allow the City to complete work on the estate’s internal reticulation network.
Residents in Welgedacht, Selborne Slot, Oude Westhof, Kanonberg, Kanonberg Lifestyle Estate and Van Riebeeckshof will also be affected. A test shut-off will take place on Tuesday, 1 September, from 10:00 to 15:00, ahead of the actual shutdown on Thursday, 3 September, from 09:00 to 17:00. The work will enable the installation of a pressure-reducing valve on the water supply main.
Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, has advised residents in affected areas to store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance.
Meanwhile, visual leak detection will be conducted in Melkbosstrand, Thornton and Welgemoed Lower from Monday to Friday, between 09:30 and 15:00. The City says there will be no water disruption during this exercise.
“A leak detection team will be walking in the streets to identify potential leaks and check all pipe contact points such as valves, water meters and fire hydrants.”
Zero-pressure testing will also affect Ndabeni, Oude Molen and adjacent parts of Maitland on Tuesday from 09:00 to 17:00. Some residents may experience low pressure or no water during the testing.
The City says the work forms part of its Water Demand Management Strategy, aimed at reducing pipe bursts and water wastage.
