Massive crowds are heading to Cape Town this Saturday. The Springboks and All Blacks return to the Mother City for a major clash. The match at DHL Stadium is already sold out, with a capacity crowd of 62 000 expected for the 17:10 kick-off.

“With a full house at the stadium and thousands of people expected in and around the CBD and Green Point, we anticipate significant congestion on our roads on match day,” says the city’s jp smith.

 

Massive crowds heading to Cape Town this Saturday

The four-time Rugby World Cup champions will take on New Zealand at DHL Stadium this Saturday. It’s expected to be one of the biggest sporting occasions on the city’s calendar this year.

“We encourage supporters to plan their journeys early, make use of the available shuttle services where possible, and arrive with plenty of time to spare,” said the City’s JP Smith.

The City is rolling out the red carpet this week, welcoming thousands of rugby supporters for the latest chapter of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry. Local Safety and Security services have been working alongside the event organiser SA Rugby and SAPS to ensure a safe and seamless experience for residents, visitors, and rugby fans.

There’ll be a dedicated coned-off bus lane

The Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says the MyCiTi shuttle will operate from five locations. These are: Civic Centre, Thibault Square, CTICC, UCT and Bellville Velodrome – from 11:30, ahead of stadium gates opening at 12:00.

“A lot of planning has gone into managing the movement of spectators and traffic,” added Smith.

He says the shuttle will operate on a dedicated coned-off bus lane, ensuring fans skip the traffic queue. Smith added that following the match, the last return shuttle from the stadium to the designated pick-up points will depart at 22:30.

475 free parking bays at the Civic Centre

Citizens and visitors are reminded that parking in and around the stadium will be limited. The City has advised that there’s sufficient parking in the CBD if you plan to use the shuttle or take the FanWalk to Green Point.

You can park at the Civic Centre, where 475 free parking bays will be made available to ticketed rugby fans. This can be accessed on a first-come, first-served basis from 11 am. You can reach these parking areas from Hertzog Boulevard inbound and Civic Road.

University parking

Parking spots will also be available at UCT. Rugby-loving spectators can park on Upper Campus. There they will be able to make use of the shuttle from the UCT Shuttle North Stop at Madiba Circle.

Smith added, “Our City services will work alongside SAPS to manage the event and ensure a safe, well-managed and memorable experience for all.”

Paid parking

If you want to pay for parking, head on over to the CTICC, Ryk Tulbagh Square, Picbel Parkade, Plein Park, at the Parkalot on Jack Craig Street and at Harbour Arch on Harbour Arch Boulevard. Remember that free on-street parking in the CBD will also be available from 1 pm, subject to applicable restrictions.

Rugby-lovers are also reminded of the dedicated e-hailing facility. This will be established at P14 on Green Point Main Road, between York Road and Wigtown Road.

You can use e-hailing services to the designated facility to assist with the smooth movement of traffic around the stadium precinct.

Expect increased traffic volumes and temporary road closures

Smith further said that residents and motorists should be aware that there will be increased traffic volumes and temporary road closures, as well as restrictions in and around the CBD. Green Point and the stadium precinct will be heavily affected.

This includes:

• Granger Boulevard (between Green Point Circle and Beach Road).
• Beach Road in Granger Bay.
• Fritz Sonnenberg Road (between Granger Boulevard and Beach Road).
• Stephan Way (between Fritz Sonnenberg Road and Hamilton’s Rugby Club).
• Vlei Road (between Helen Suzman Boulevard and Fritz Sonnenberg Road).
• Fort Wynyard Street (between Portswood Road and Granger Bay Boulevard).
• Granger Bay Boulevard (between Helen Suzman Boulevard and Beach Road).

He says road restrictions will be in place between 06:00 and 22:30 on Saturday, 29 August 2026.

The City of Cape Town, together with SA Rugby and other partners, is pulling out all the stops to prepare for a sold-out DHL Stadium and significant traffic volumes when the Springboks take on the All Blacks this Saturday, 29 August 2026.
