Motorists are being warned about a traffic fine scam circulating via email and text messages.

The scam targets motorists with fake notices demanding payment of alleged traffic fines within 24 hours, or they will face legal action.

Traffic Services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs urges motorists to verify any fines through official channels before making payments.

“If you receive a fine, check the details closely, including whether you were in fact in the area mentioned or shown on the photograph on the day in question. Alternatively, visit your nearest Driving Licence Testing Centre or one of our other fine payment points to check the validity of the fine.”

Jacobs reminds motorists that the City follows a very specific process when issuing fines.

“We want to remind the public to please be careful and verify notices received before making payment or sharing their details.  In Cape Town, infringement notices are sent via post and MMS, with follow up SMS reminders. They will include a picture of the fine notice, and links to the two online platforms.”
