Consumers are alerted to the recall of various SPAR yoghurt products, which may cause an upset stomach if consumed.
The National Consumer Commission said the recall affects SPAR’s fat-free, low-fat, double cream, Indulge double cream and Active drinking yoghurts. These are in various flavours.
Spokesperson Pheto Ntaba said the products were sold nationally from 15 June, with a sell-by date of 9 August and a use-by date of 12 August.
The list of products includes:
- SPAR Low Fat Strawberry Yoghurt with Fruit 500 g (barcode: 6001008169632; outer barcode: 26001008169636), with 280 cases produced;
- SPAR Low Fat Passion Fruit & Orange Yoghurt 150 g (barcode: 6001008651298; outer barcode: 16001008651295), 258 cases;
- SPAR Low Fat Passion Fruit & Orange Yoghurt 1 kg (barcode: 6001008652417; outer barcode: 16001008652414), 513 cases;
- SPAR Low Fat Plain Yoghurt 1 kg (barcode: 6001008169762; outer barcode: 16001008169796), 655 cases;
- SPAR Low Fat Mixed Berry Yoghurt 1 kg (barcode: 6001008169694; outer barcode: 16001008169691), 516 cases;
- SPAR Fat Free Strawberry Yoghurt 500 g (barcode: 6001008170997; outer barcode: 26001008170991), 228 cases;
- SPAR Fat Free Peach & Apricot Yoghurt 500 g (barcode: 6001008651793; outer barcode: 36001008651794), 304 cases;
- SPAR Active Drinking Yoghurt Strawberry & Oats 300 ml (barcode: 6001008728099; outer barcode: 16001008728096), 368 cases;
- SPAR Active Drinking Yoghurt Blackcurrant, Apple & Oats 300 ml (barcode: 6001008651489; outer barcode: 16001008651486), 256 cases;
- SPAR Double Cream Yoghurt Black Forest 1 kg (barcode: 6001008804793; outer barcode: 16001008804790), 260 cases;
- and SPAR Indulge Double Cream Yoghurt Strawberry and White Choc 100 ml (barcode: 6001008804915; outer barcode: 16001008804912), with 349 cases produced.
It’s said that a machine malfunctioned during the production of the products, which caused product blowing – which is when a product’s packaging swells or puffs up because gas (due to yeast or bacteria fermenting the contents) has built up inside the package.
“This may cause changes in the product’s taste, smell, and appearance. Consumption of the affected products may cause stomach upset,” said Ntaba.
Consumers are urged not to consume the product and to return affected products to their nearest Spar for a refund or exchange.
“The NCC encourages all consumers to respond promptly to product safety recalls.”
