The Western Cape SAPS has confirmed that two mass shootings rocked the Cape Flats on Wednesday night, claiming the lives of seven victims in total.

In the first incident, in Lost City, Tafelsig, five men were shot on the corner of Laura Street and Eighth Avenue at around 20:10.

SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Andre Traut, confirmed that three of the victims, aged 18, 19 and 51, died on the scene. Two others, including the youngest victim aged 17, were transported to hospital.

“Five men were reportedly standing outside a local tuck shop when they were approached by armed suspects who opened fire on them,” said Traut.

Then, at around 20:30, seven young people were shot, of whom four were killed, in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East.

Traut said the deceased were between 17 and 20 years old. The remaining victims were transported to hospital.

He noted that the circumstances of both incidents are under investigation, adding that detectives are working on identifying and apprehending the suspects.

“The motive for the shootings is yet to be determined and forms part of the police investigation,” said Traut.

Meanwhile, police visibility has been bolstered in the affected areas.

“To prevent any further violence and to enhance public safety, police deployments in the affected areas have been heightened. Members will maintain a visible presence and continue to conduct crime prevention operations aimed at stabilising the communities and ensuring the safety of residents.”

These shootings come on the back of fatal shootings in Delft and Khayelitsha, in which a client at a barbershop and a security guard were killed.
