Five suspects have been arrested and a variety of drugs and ammunition confiscated as police intensified efforts to rid Cape Town communities of illegal substances during Operation Prosper.

The arrests were made on Thursday, 2 July, during crime-combatting operations in Kraaifontein, Khayelitsha.

In Scottsdene, Kraaifontein, officers searched a property in Milner Street where they recovered 48 mandrax tablets, 22 sachets of crystal meth and 14 rounds of .38 Special ammunition.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said three suspects, aged 27 and 28, were arrested on charges of possession of drugs and the unlawful possession of ammunition.

In a separate operation in Makhaza, police searched a home in the 43 Block informal settlement, where they allegedly found 18 mandrax tablets and 37 sachets of crystal meth.

“A 31-year-old man was arrested and is expected to face a charge of possession of drugs.”

Meanwhile, in the Kanini informal settlement in Harare, officers searched an informal dwelling and confiscated a large quantity of dagga, including 77 small sachets allegedly prepared for distribution. A 26-year-old man was arrested for possession of dagga.

All five suspects are expected to appear in the Blue Downs and Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Courts once they have been formally charged.
