A case of culpable homicide is under investigation after an elderly lady succumbed to her injuries following a freak accident on Bonteheuwel Avenue, Bonteheuwel, yesterday.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) says the woman was speaking with the driver of a vehicle when the driver attempted to get out to continue the conversation. During this, her foot accidentally pressed the accelerator, causing the vehicle to reverse suddenly.

“The lady was treated for leg pain by medical personnel at the scene and transported to a nearby hospital for further care. She was later declared deceased at the hospital in the evening,” SAPS confirmed.

Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie is urging the public not to spread misinformation about the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

“I have engaged with both the family of the deceased and the driver involved. Both families are deeply traumatised and devastated by what has happened. The driver remained on the scene throughout and has been fully cooperative. This was a terrible, freak accident with no intention to harm.”
