Three youths killed in Samora Machel

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has condemned a violent shooting incident in Samora Machel that claimed the lives of three young people on Saturday morning, 24 January 2026.

 

According to police, the shooting occurred at around 11:55 in Oliver Tambo Drive. The victims were seated inside a Suzuki Ertiga when they were approached by unknown suspects who opened fire before fleeing the scene.

 

Three victims, aged between 16 and 21, were declared dead at the scene. A fourth victim, a 19-year-old, was transported to a medical facility for treatment. The motive for the attack is currently unknown.

 

The Serious and Violent Crime Unit is investigating the incident. Samora Machel SAPS has opened three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

 

Police have increased deployments in the area, with enhanced patrols and visibility aimed at stabilising the community and maintaining law and order.
