Step Into a Real-Life Fairytale at The Masque This Festive Season
The Masque’s annual year-end fairytale has become a beloved Cape Town tradition, known for transforming timeless stories into vibrant, laugh-out-loud musical adventures. This year is no exception. Expect a lively retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen classic—filled with dazzling characters, cheeky humour, fabulous local tunes and enchanting moments for audiences of all ages.

A Festive Classic With a Fresh, Fairy-Tale Twist
Running from 12 December to 11 January, this fairytale follows Princess Anika on her journey to discover what true leadership really means. At the same time, young Eli learns to find his voice, and handsome Stefan realises that he’s more than just a pretty face. And then there’s Pepper. Pepper is the irresistible, larger-than-life chef, stirring up the story with life lessons, laughs, and a recipe for heroism that includes bravery, honour, humour and just a hint of something special.
A Tale Cooked With Magic, Mischief and… Well, Peas
Producer and Programme Manager Faeron Wheeler promises a soundtrack that’s pure joy. Audiences can expect hits from Freshlyground, Jesse and Johnny Clegg, Shekhinah, plus sprinkles of Shakira, Adam Lambert, Meghan Trainor, and beloved Disney favourites. Written and directed by Savannah Steyn, the production marks a magical full-circle moment in her Masque journey—from intern to director.
“With our quirky cast and a sprinkle of Masque magic, audiences are in for a five-star fairytale feast,” she says.
A Musical Potion With Local Flavour
Musical direction comes from Lara Basson, a long-time favourite in Cape Town’s community theatre scene. Bring the little ones (and the grandparents!) to a matinee to enjoy a charming fairy parade after the show—or rally your friends for an evening of musical fun and festive laughs.
