The Steenberg Community Safety Forum (CPF) is urging residents to celebrate Guy Fawkes peacefully and responsibly this year.

Forum deputy chairperson Erica Jacobs says the community continues to witness acts of lawlessness disguised as Guy Fawkes celebrations each year.

“We want to caution all children, parents, and our broader community ahead of the Guy Fawkes period. Every year, we see unnecessary violence, intimidation, and criminal behaviour. This is not acceptable and should not be tolerated.”

She says they have already seen a spike in incidents since last week, including stone throwing, in what they attribute to the build up towards Guy Fawkes.

Jacobs reminds parents to know their children’s whereabouts at all times and called on youngsters not to give in to peer pressure or engage in dangerous activities.

“Children, don’t get involved in assault, stone throwing, intimidation, robbery, fireworks abuse, or property damage, these are criminal offences. Our streets already face too much violence. Let’s protect one another, report crime, and choose safety.”

Meanwhile, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith warned that fireworks may only be discharged with a valid permit.

“Officers will act if they catch anyone setting off fireworks illegally, but it’s best to stop it at the source. If you see fireworks being sold without a permit, report it immediately to the Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.”

Smith added that while reports of incidents on Guy Fawkes Day have decreased in recent years, more effort is needed to reduce risk and harm.

“In a city already struggling with violent crime and gun violence, Guy Fawkes celebrations often cause trauma for residents. We’ll deploy resources to known hotspots, but we also urge the public to report any signs of criminality to help keep communities safe.”
