Another wave of shootings has rocked the community of Mitchell’s Plain this weekend, leaving several people dead and others wounded.
Police confirmed that two men, aged 42 and 48, were shot and killed in Grey Street, Tafelsig, on Saturday. According to spokesperson Wesley Twigg, the motive is believed to be gang-related, and no arrests have yet been made.
“Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. One victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the other was taken to a medical facility where he later died. According to reports, the victims were sitting on the pavement when they were approached by unknown suspects who shot them before fleeing the scene.”
In separate incidents, an 18-year-old was gunned down in Judo Street, Beacon Valley, while a 45-year-old man was shot and killed at the Town Centre bus terminus, also on Saturday. Twigg says both victims were approached by armed suspects who fled the scene, and investigations are underway.
“The circumstances surrounding the incidents are under investigation. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile app anonymously,” he added.”
Meanwhile, police are also investigating a case of attempted murder following a shooting in Austin Street, Beacon Valley, on Sunday, in which a 28-year-old man was shot and wounded.
“PolIce members attended to the crime scene and upon arrival on the scene the victim was taken to a medical facility for treatment in a private vehicle. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.”
Cape Flats Safety Forum (CFSF) Chairperson Abie Isaacs says the surge in gun violence in Mitchell’s Plain is deeply troubling and calls for urgent intervention.
“We are concerned about the number of shootings and the loss of lives in the area due to gun violence. The CFSF is still calling for a probe to be set up. We also want to acknowledge the good work by law enforcement agencies in retrieving firearms and arresting suspects.”
