He was rushed to a local medical facility, where Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus Mackenzie said he was declared dead on arrival.

“Police members were called to the local day hospital where the body of the victim was pointed out by medical staff… he was declared deceased on arrival at the medical facility,” said Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Wesley Twigg.

Bishop Lavis registered a case of culpable homicide as they continue their investigation into the circumstances of the incident. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident as yet.

McKenzie identified the boy as Luke Peterson, a young resident of Bonteheuwel.

He further noted that the incident has left the community is pain, with him personally being impacted, having known the boy.

McKenzie described Luke as “so full of joy and innocence” and said his passing was “absolutely heartbreaking”.

“I have had the privilege of meeting Luke on numerous occasions.”

He extended his condolences to the Peterson family.

“I have spoken with you, and I want you to know that we will do everything possible to support you through this very, very difficult time,” said McKenzie.
