City’s Safety and Security Directorate has confirmed the death of a Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officer who was hijacked and attacked in Philippi East on Sunday.

According to the Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, the 26-year-old officer was off duty when he was hijacked by two suspects, who stabbed him multiple times and stoned him.

LEAP officers responded to the scene in Sheffield Road following the Incident, where the officer’s vehicle was found abandoned.

The injured officer was later found in the Marikana Informal Settlement after trying to flee from his attackers. Smith, however, confirmed that the officer died in hospital due to his injuries.

Law Enforcement officers have arrested one suspect in connection with the attack, while another suspect is still being sought.

Smith has called on the community to come forward with information regarding the second suspect.

“The Safety and Security Directorate will work tirelessly to ensure that those behind this senseless murder are brought to book.”
