One person has died and six others were left injured after a serious crash on the R61 road between Komani and Takastad on Saturday.
Police confirmed that a Toyota Rush SUV, travelling from Takastad towards Komani with seven occupants, lost control and overturned about five kilometres outside Komani.
The vehicle was carrying three men, two women and a 12-year-old boy.
An adult female passenger was declared dead at the scene. The remaining six occupants sustained various injuries and were transported to Frontier Provincial Hospital in Komani for further medical examination.
According to the Eastern Cape Transport Department, the cause of the accident has not yet been established. Authorities said investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Komani SAPS for further investigations.
Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose has urged road users to exercise caution while travelling, as police continue with their inquiries into the cause of the fatal crash.
