The City boasts with a new nature reserve. The new Schapenberg Nature Reserve in Somerset West will officially open tomorrow, Friday, 19 September 2025.

 

Mother Nature calls

 

According to the Executive Support Officer to the Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Letitia Mathieson, the new reserve is located on the western side of the Schapenberg Hills on land recently acquired by the City.

She says it consists of about 14 hectares of Endangered Swartland Shale Renosterveld. It also adjoins a private conservation area. Mathieson says the views from the hill are spectacular.

The reserve gives an uninterrupted outlook over the False Bay coastline

 

Visitors are treated to an uninterrupted outlook over the False Bay coastline and across the Cape Flats to Table Mountain.
