Pupil arrested after stabbing four others with a screwdriver at Mitchells Plain school

Published on

Four learners were stabbed during a fight at AZ Berman High School in Mitchell’s Plain on Wednesday.

It is alleged that a fellow learner, an 18-year-old Grade 10 pupil, attacked the victims with a screwdriver.

Police say the victims were taken to the hospital for treatment, while the suspect has since been arrested on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

In a notice to parents, Principal Kevin Voges also confirmed the incident, expressing his sadness at what happened.

Initially, Voges reported that three learners had been stabbed, but the Western Cape Education Department later clarified that it is four learners who were injured.

“Another learner had what appears to be an epileptic fit, and she, too, has been taken to the hospital.”

Voges lauded his staff for disarming the boy and rendering medical assistance to the victims until the paramedics arrived.

He says calm has been restored.

The Western Cape Education Department’s Bronagh Hammond confirmed that counselling support will be offered to affected learners.

The Grade 10 accused learner was also suspended earlier, before his arrest.

He will appear in court soon.

*This article has been updated to reflect that the accused learner has been arrested, and that four learners were stabbed, not three, as initially reported.
