Five killed in gang violence in Steenberg since the weekend

Published on

Several gang-related shootings were reported in the Steenberg and Retreat areas yesterday, with at least 5 deaths since Saturday.

On Saturday and Sunday, at least two shootings were reported, leading to the deaths of two men.

On Monday, the bullets kept on flying, and among the victims was a 17-year-old teenager who was gunned down in Beethoven Street in Retreat just after 12:00 on Monday afternoon.

Two other men in their twenties were shot and wounded.

The police’s Wesley Twigg says the 17-year-old victim was declared deceased by medical personnel, while the other victims were taken to a medical facility for treatment.

According to reports, the victims were standing in front of a residence when a Datsun Go drove up to them, and the occupants opened fire on the victims before fleeing the scene.

Later on Monday afternoon, at around 16:30, two men, aged 24 and 37, were shot dead on a field in Flute Street, Steenberg.

Police members attended to the crime scene, where they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. The victims were walking in the street when a white vehicle stopped next to them, and the occupants started shooting at them.

Police are still looking for suspects involved in all five fatal shooting incidents.

According to local crime groups, the violence is due to infighting in the Junky Funkies gang, which has also seen several fatal shootings in Vrygrond and surrounding areas.
