Makhaza police registered a murder case following a fatal taxi-related shooting incident at the Somerset taxi rank in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, on Saturday.
According to police reports, the shooting, which occurred at 06:30, led to an adult male being shot and fatally wounded.
Police Captain FC Van Wyk says officers received a complaint about a shooting incident at the taxi rank and found the body of the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, lying on his back halfway out the door of the taxi.
“The adult male was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel,” says Van Wyk
Van Wyk says the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, but the motive for the incident is believed to be taxi-related. No arrests have been made.
Taxi association, CODETA, condemned the killing and confirmed that it was one of their taxi drivers who was shot and killed in the incident.
The association’s spokesperson, Makhosandile Tumana, says the association does not want to speculate on the reason behind the shooting at this stage. However, this incident comes amid tensions between taxi associations CATA and CODETA regarding the Somerset and Strand taxi routes.
Tumana has extended his condolences, on behalf of the association, to the family of the taxi driver and apologised to the commuters affected by the incident.
