The sizzle is on for the Boerewors Champion

The sizzle is on for the Boerewors Champion. This is, as the 2025 Shoprite and Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition has revealed its Top 10 finalists. After weeks of intense cook-offs, ten passionate home cooks, chefs, and butchers have made it to the Grand Finale, proving they have the perfect recipe that balances tradition, flavour, and heart.

Between Wellington and Paarl, the air is thick with anticipation. This year’s local line-up features returning champion Tyron Adams from Wellington, seasoned braai expert and first-time contestant Roberto Agrela from Paarl, as well as Wellington’s very own father-and-son duo, Roland and Xavier Blaauw.

LOCAL finalists: Western Cape can be super proud

Meanwhile, the Western Cape can be super proud as 4 of the finalists are from here. First-time finalist Roberto Agrela, a car salesman from Paarl, trusted his instincts and focused on quality ingredients to get his recipe right.

“Boerewors is more than just a meal. It brings families and friends together, especially around the braai,” he says.

Tyron Adams (33) from Wellington has turned his passion for food into a thriving catering business called Kumin & Khords. This year marks his fourth time entering the competition, and his return to the Top 10 is proof that persistence pays off.

“I didn’t even make the Top 30 in 2021,” he says. “But I kept refining the recipe. Winning in 2023 was incredible, and now I’m back to see if I can do it again.”

Xavier Blaauw (18), a matric learner at Huguenot High School in Wellington, grew up watching his mother, Yvonne and older brother Delano, take top honours in the Championship Boerewors Competition.

The Western Cape boasts three finalists

Yvonne, a Meat Market Manager at Shoprite Wellington, was crowned champion in 2018 and Delano, a high school teacher, in 2020. Now, in between his schoolwork, he is trying to bring the title home again. It’s his third time in the Top 10, and this year he’s competing alongside his father, Roland Blaauw, an Application Support Specialist for the Shoprite Group.
