A taxi driver has been gunned down in a fatal shooting incident in Kenington on Friday morning.
According to police, the driver of a minibus taxi with three passengers stopped at about 05:50, near the corners of 16th Avenue and Voortrekker Roads, when an unidentified man boarded the vehicle.
Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says the man drew a pistol and shot the driver from behind.
“The driver intended to respond; however, multiple gunshots then followed, which resulted in him sustaining fatal injuries,” added Swartbooi
The suspect then got out of the taxi and fled to a nearby getaway vehicle after he took the taxi driver’s firearm.
Swartbooi says the driver was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. Police believe the motive for this attack was retaliation.
Following a manhunt launched by the Kensington police in pursuit of those responsible for this horrific incident, a 28-year-old man has since been detained in connection with the fatal shooting incident.
The suspect will make a court appearance in the Cape Town Central Magistrates’ Court once charged.
Kensington police are investigating a murder and three counts of attempted murder.
