Mutliple fatal cyclist accidents; renewed calls for safety

Published on

There are renewed calls for cyclists’ safety, following fatal incidents in recent weeks. The most recent incident occurred on Chapman’s Peak on Saturday, when three cyclists were hit by a tour bus.

One cyclist died on the scene, one sustained serious injuries and had to be airlifted to the hospital and the other sustained minor injuries.

“Hout Bay police registered a culpable homicide case following an accident on Chapman’s Peak Drive… Anyone with information about this incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,” said Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk.

This is days after an elderly cyclist died in hospital after being pushed off his bike and robbed of his belongings while cycling in Cape Town’s CBD.

No arrests have been made in connection with this case yet. A memorial ride was held in honour of the cyclist, Dennis Hammar, over the weekend.

Another cyclist died on Friday, after being hit by a vehicle in Claremont.

Captain Van Wyk said reports suggest that the 35-year-old cyclist swerved away to avoid a collision with a vehicle door that unexpectedly opened, and in so doing, fell off his bicycle on Main Road, in front of an oncoming vehicle.

“He fell off the bicycle and landed in front of an oncoming taxi which couldn’t stop timeously. The 35-year-old cyclist succumbed on the scene to injuries sustained.”

Claremont police registered a culpable homicide case, and no arrest has been made yet.

The Pedal Power Association (PPA) reported that more incidents occurred last week, such as a vehicle colliding with two cyclists on Bottelary Road, and another cyclist being hit by a truck in Durbanville. The organisation is appealing to motorists and cyclists to practice caution while on the roads.

“The PPA wishes to express our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the cyclists who lost their lives. We wish those that were injured, a speedy recovery. We also issue an urgent appeal to all motorists and cyclists to practice caution and respect on our roads so that we never experience a week like this again,” read a PPA statement.
