President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to host a family meeting at 19h00 on Sunday, 13 July 2025, following serious allegations made against senior political figures, including Minister Senzo Mchunu and top leadership within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The address follows a public statement made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, during a media briefing on Sunday, 6 July, while the President was attending a BRICS summit in Brazil.

In that briefing, Mkhwanazi detailed “allegations against senior political and South African Police Service leadership”, claims which have since caused widespread concern about the stability and integrity of key state institutions.

Upon his return to South Africa, President Ramaphosa pledged to prioritise the issue, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and its implications for national security.

“The President undertook to attend to this development on his return from Brazil, in view of the implications for national security,” said Presidency spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya.

In the days following, Ramaphosa has “been seized with this matter” and is currently engaging in a series of consultations, including with individuals directly implicated in the allegations.

These meetings are taking place ahead of his national address.

Presidency officials confirmed that “following various consultations,” the President will “take the nation into his confidence” during Sunday’s briefing.
