Metrorail Western Cape are investigating an incident that occurred at the level crossing at Philippi Train Station on the Central line on Wednesday morning.

Reports from the crew are that the train driver saw a car near the level crossing as the train was approaching, and he sounded a warning horn.

But despite the warning horn, the driver of the car proceeded onto the level crossing, resulting in the train hitting the car.

Miraculously, the driver of the car escaped unharmed, and no other casualties were reported. Services on the Central Line were disrupted, as trains had to be turned back to Nyanga.

Metrorail Western Cape has urged motorists to obey warning signals when approaching level crossings.

Spokesperson Zino Mihi says trains may appear to be moving slowly at a distance, which can result in motorists miscalculating their speed.

“Trains are fast-moving and aren’t able to make sudden stops. Therefore, we urge all road users and pedestrians to continue exercising extreme caution when approaching level crossings and to adhere to warning signals. The Central Line Service has since been restored, and trains are now operating according to schedule.”
