An elephant Seal was in a residential area in Gordon’s Bay on Tuesday morning. This is indeed a highly irregular headline to find in our news.
An Elephant Seal has been spotted
The SPCA has, however, confirmed that their inspectors were on-site in Sir Lowry’s Pass Road immediately, where an elephant seal somehow found its way into a residential area.
A rather unexpected visitor
The NPO says was actively working on a safe and stress-free plan to relocate this magnificent marine mammal.

Stay away from the elephant seal
People were asked to stay away from the area. This helped give officials space to work out a plan on how to assist the animal. They also had to keep the marine animal calm while they carried out the relocation.

Cape Town Traffic officials were also on hand to assist:
“The City’s Traffic Service is in Gordon’s Bay to assist the SPCA with the relocation of a seal that ended up in Sir Lowry’s Pass Road earlier this morning. Officers are awaiting further guidance from the SPCA, but at this time, no roads are closed. Indications are that the seal will be transported back to the beachfront via trailer, so we do not anticipate road closures.”
The SPCA later provided an update that they were waiting for a wildlife vet to arrive who would safely sedate the seal before it loaded onto the trailer for transport.
At around 3pm on Tuesday afternoon, the elephant seal was finally loaded onto a trailer, and transported to *Kogel Bay for release.
* Earlier, it was erroneously reported that the seal was transported to Kalk Bay.
