A man alleged to have made threats against President Cyril Ramaphosa, Cape Town Mayor Geordin-Hill Lewis, and others is due in court on Monday.

The suspect was apprehended on Friday, 23 May, by the Hawks’ Crime Against The State (CATS) unit, part of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation. His arrest follows a case reported earlier this month involving threats made against several high-profile individuals.

According to police, the matter was brought to their attention after a complainant, who is the Chief Executive Officer of a Cape Town-based company, received a disturbing voice message on Monday, 12 May.

In the message, the suspect allegedly threatened to kill the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.

“The complainant further alleged that the suspect sent her several other threatening messages, threatening her and her family as well as the Executive Mayor of Cape Town,” said the Hawks.

The incident was reported to the Cape Town-based Hawks’ CATS team, which launched an immediate investigation that led to the arrest in Germiston, Gauteng.

“The matter and information was reported to the Cape Town based Hawks’ Crime Against The State (CATS) for further investigation culminating in the arrest of the suspect in Gauteng,” said Brigadier Thandi Mbambo in a statement.

The 28-year-old has since been transported to Cape Town, where he is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on a charge of intimidation.

Police confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
