The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warned about a commuter ‘free-for-all’ at several Cape Town train stations, which it says is posing a serious public safety risk.

In a statement this week, the Chamber says it has received reports from stakeholders in the taxi and bus sector that non-paying passengers are ‘barging’ onto trains en masse at key train stations, which it describes as a ‘ticking time bomb.’

Chamber Deputy President Derryn Brigg says this lawlessness is escalating tensions within an already volatile sector.

Brigg says the recent torching of several taxis in Nyanga was reportedly related to a significant drop in business, as a result of these ‘free train rides.’

Steenberg, Stock Road and Nyanga are three current flashpoint areas, which the Chamber says require immediate attention.

“Metrorail has a legal obligation to protect its passengers. It has also made good progress in repairing the commuter rail system following years of neglect. We cannot allow years of good work to be undone by criminal elements intent on destabilising a fragile commuter network – to the detriment of commuter safety.”

In response, Metrorail has said it takes these concerns raised by the Chamber extremely seriously.

Spokesperson Zino Mihi says they have launched an immediate investigation, which will include reviewing video footage from Steenberg, Nyanga, and Stock Road stations.

Mihi says passenger safety is of paramount importance, and they have already implemented various measures to ensure this safety, including additional security personnel at stations, CCTV surveillance, access control and fare enforcement.

“We value our relationship with the Cape Chamber. We are committed to working together to ensure the safety and security of all passengers using public transport. We understand the importance of maintaining a good reputation and will take all necessary steps to address the concerns raised by The Cape Chamber. We are committed to providing a safe and secure service to our passengers.”

She has urged all passengers to use the official entrances and exits at Metrorail stations and to pay their fares.
