A father and daughter have been arrested following a high-speed chase and crash in Gustrouw, Strand, on Tuesday.

The pair, aged 63 and 37 respectively, were accused of stealing a generator during a house robbery in the early hours of the morning. Members of a local security company had initially responded to the incident. Western Cape police spokesperson, Anelisiwe Manyana, said when police officers arrived on the scene, the private security members came under attack.

“Upon arrival in William Steward Street at around 05:00, they found local security members under attack by community members who apprehended two suspects found in possession of a generator stolen at a nearby premises,” said Manyana.

Manyana added that the suspects attempted to flee in a vehicle, resulting in a high-speed chase through the streets of Gustrouw.

“The driver of the motor vehicle collided with another vehicle. The police members took action when they dispersed the unruly crowd and arrested [the suspects],” Manyana confirmed.

The suspects were then transported to a local hospital, where they were kept under police guard. Following medical treatment for injuries sustained in the crash, they were discharged from the hospital and taken into police custody.

Niklaas Thysen, chairperson of the Strand Community Policing Forum, said residents were infuriated by the incident.

“The community was [outraged]… because the alleged suspect was known to the community,” Thysen said.

He added that the forum is following the matter, so that the suspects are held accountable.

Strand police are investigating charges of housebreaking, theft, and reckless and negligent driving. Manyana said the suspects will appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
