Clarence Drive (R44) between Rooi Els and Gordon’s Bay will face significant disruptions in May as emergency flood damage repairs get underway.

The coastal route will undergo both lane closures and full road closures for infrastructure upgrades, including stormwater system installation and parking area resurfacing. Authorities are urging motorists to plan ahead and expect delays.

Lane closures will be in effect from 5 May to 22 May 2025, limited to daytime hours only.

During this time, Stop/Go traffic controls will be implemented to allow for the safe movement of vehicles through the construction zone.

A full closure of Clarence Drive is scheduled from 8 May to 15 May 2025, operating daily from 09:00 AM to 4:00 PM, excluding weekends. No traffic will be permitted during these hours, and alternative routes are recommended.

These repairs are part of an urgent response to flood damage in the area and are essential for ensuring the long-term safety and usability of the road. The Western Cape Government has emphasised its commitment to maintaining road infrastructure.

“Please drive carefully during this period of construction,” said Infrastructure MEC, Tertius Simmers.

Motorists are advised to stay updated on the latest traffic notices and to consider adjusting their travel times or routes during the affected period.
