An Open Day has been held at the place where the planned expansion of Cape Winelands Airport is due to take place. Stakeholders gathered near the airfield yesterday to share their thoughts on the expansion of the airport in Durbanville.

Davids added, “Destinations across the globe continue to compete for visitors. Ease of connectivity and ease of access are important considerations for all travellers.”

A spokesperson for the airport, Deidre Davids, says the Open Day formed part of the Environmental Impact Assessment for the R8-billion project. This includes studies on the socio-economic, ecological, and community impact the airport may have.

She says it’s expected that the airport would bring in an initial investment of approximately R8 billion into the economy of the Western Cape. It is one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the City of Cape Town. The estimated date for it to open is early 2028.

Public participation process concluded

Davids says the Cape Winelands Airport expansion involves an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which is being conducted. She says at least 40 specialist studies have been completed. They range from flora and fauna, noise, socio-economic, avifaunal to airspace. At the same time, this is an essential regulatory process, especially for a development of this scale.
