No horsing around… A seahorse has been born

An endangered seahorse has been born in Knysna. SANPARKS says this rare species of seahorse is found naturally only in three estuaries in the world. They are all located in the Garden Route, in Swartvlei, Knysna, and Keurbooms.

At the same time, the endangered Knysna seahorse (Hippocampus capensis) can be viewed in the display tank at SANPARKS’ Thesen Island office. This is one of the few locations in South Africa permitted to house and display captive Knysna seahorses for educational purposes.

Iconic marine creatures

 

A media statement further pointed to this, offering visitors a unique opportunity to view these iconic marine creatures up close while learning about the threats they face in the wild. Some of these threats include habitat degradation and pollution.

Educational display tank

 

From the media statement: The endangered Knysna seahorse (Hippocampus capensis) has recently been successfully restocked in the educational display tank at the South African National Parks (SANParks) office on Thesen Island, Knysna. This initiative forms part of SANParks’ ongoing efforts to raise awareness about this unique species and to strengthen conservation education in the Garden Route National Park.
