Calls for security systems at all courts to be overhauled

Veteran criminal defence attorney William Booth says security systems at all courts should be overhauled.

On Tuesday, a man was shot and killed on the fourth floor of the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court. It was previously reported that the man was a state witness, but it has now been confirmed that he was an accused in a murder case.

Police have yet to arrest those who are responsible for the well-orchestrated, alleged gang-related hit. Booth — who has also escaped at least seven attempts on his life — says urgent intervention is required.

“Security in general at all our courts, specifically Wynberg, because there have been prior incidents where people were shot outside the court, and I think there was an attack outside the court as well, but this shooting took place on the fourth floor,” said Booth.

Even as this was not a state witness who was killed, local crimefighter and community leader Byron De Villiers added his voice to the matter by saying that these incidents could deter people from supplying police with information and testifying when they are subpoenaed.

“It’s definitely a contributing factor when it comes to people testifying and coming to court. A lot can be said and done to prevent these types of incidents. If you look at the safety in and outside our courts, there is very minimal protection,” said De Villiers.

It’s believed the victim was a taxi owner from Vrygrond.

“What I do know is that on a previous court visit, when exiting the court, he was also shot at, so I think it is the second attempt on his life,” added De Villiers.
