The City of Cape Town has officially launched its first-ever domestic animal survey in a bid to enhance future planning and resource allocation for animal welfare.

The six-week survey, conducted in collaboration with the animal welfare sector, aims to establish a baseline on the city’s animal population.

The initiative is the latest in a series of interventions by the City administration to promote animal welfare.

Previous efforts include implementing by-laws on animal keeping, establishing a dedicated Animal Control Unit within Law Enforcement, funding over a decade of mass sterilization campaigns in partnership with the Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF), and setting up an anti-dog fighting task team. Additionally, the City has formalized a memorandum of understanding regarding the impoundment of dangerous or distressed animals.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, emphasized the importance of the survey in shaping future policies.

“The City’s continued investment in animal welfare stems from the understanding that healthy animal populations are essential for public health and safety. While significant progress has been made, there is always room for improvement. This survey will provide crucial insights into animal care practices and population trends, helping us assess the effectiveness of our current measures and determine future funding, legislation, and support for the animal welfare sector.”

The survey will collect data on the type and number of domestic animals per household, their vaccination and sterilization status, and whether pet owners seek veterinary care privately or through NGOs.

Residents can participate online by completing the survey HERE.

Additionally, field workers equipped with identification cards will be visiting communities to conduct in-person surveys.

A toll-free helpline, 0800 212 176, has also been established for general inquiries, available on weekdays between 08:00 and 16:00.

The City encourages all residents, pet owners and non-pet owners alike, to take part in the survey to ensure the success of this important initiative in fostering a healthier and safer environment for both animals and the community.
