Law enforcement officers have arrested a Wellington taxi driver after a video of him transporting learners in a trailer behind his minibus taxi earlier this week went viral.

Following an investigation, the driver responsible was arrested for reckless and negligent driving, and endangering the lives of the learners.

The Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku has commended officers for their swift action in arresting the driver.

Sileku has emphasised that such reckless behavior will not be tolerated.

“It is deeply concerning that any driver would think it is acceptable to transport children in such unsafe conditions. Our law enforcement officers acted decisively, and we commend them for ensuring accountability. Scholar transport must always comply with safety regulations to protect the most vulnerable road users – our children.”

Sileku says operators transporting learners are required to comply with the provisions of the National Land Transport Act, including being in possession of a valid operating license.

Their vehicles must be roadworthy, and they must have the necessary permits to transport learners.

He has called on parents and caregivers to support the Western Cape Government’s efforts to protect school children on the roads.

“This includes taking every practical step to check that private operators transporting their children always use safe, roadworthy and reliable vehicles, and that drivers have legal authorisation to transport learners.”
