Loadshedding has been reduced to Stage 2 until further notice. Eskom announced this morning that Stage 4 loadshedding had ended at 5 am.

Meanwhile, households and businesses in Cape Town that get their electricity from the City are on Stage 1-loadshedding. This will be in place until 4 pm and then power cuts will be suspended until 10 pm. Stage 2 blackouts will be in place overnight.

A spokesperson for Eskom, Daphne Mokoena says following the successful recovery of 8 out of 10 generation units, as well as the restoration of 3 808MW from units that tripped over the weekend, an additional 1 146MW were expected to be recovered overnight.

At the same time, she added, that while the recovery of the emergency reserves is progressing well, further replenishment is required to reach sufficient levels. Moekona says these positive developments support their ongoing focused efforts to stabilise the power supply and ensure reliability.

Unplanned outages stand at 13 690MW

At the moment, unplanned outages stand at 13 690MW. This is 690MW higher than their summer outlook base case of 13 000MW. She says ongoing planned maintenance stands at 7 245MW and this is in alignment with their summer period maintenance strategy. Moekona added that these increased levels are needed to prepare for winter and meet licence and regulatory requirements.
