A man has appeared in the Mossel Bay Magistrates’ Court today, after he allegedly murdered a 15-year-old girl.

The teenager was last seen on Sunday 26 January, when she left her home to visit a friend. When she failed to return to her home in the Brandwag area, her next of kin reported her as missing. On Saturday, the police’s probe into the child’s disappearance led them to a bush near Brandwag. That is where they discovered her remains in a shallow grave.  A 27-year-old man was subsequently apprehended.

“Crime scene experts combed the scenes for clues. The Mossel Bay FCS unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder. The motive for this killing is yet to be established and it forms part of the ongoing police investigation. A post-mortem to determine the cause of death will be conducted during the week,” said Southern Cape police spokesperson Chris Spies.

The suspect has been remanded in custody and will return to the dock on Thursday 6 February, for a bail hearing.
