MyCiTi buses rerouted to avoid Hospital Bend on N2 inbound

The City of Cape Town has announced a significant route change for MyCiTi buses travelling inbound on the N2 towards the Civic Centre station. From Monday, 27 January 2025, buses travelling routes D01, D02, D03 OR D04, will be rerouted to avoid navigating the steep uphill at Hospital Bend.

 

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, say this adjustment comes after weeks of assessments and route investigations to address congestion caused by slow-moving, fully loaded buses during peak morning hours.

 

“The N2 Express service is one of our most popular MyCiTi routes, and the buses travelling to and from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha to the Civic Centre station are usually full. Given the steep gradient at Hospital Bend and being at full capacity, the inbound buses are travelling at very low speeds towards the city centre.”

 

Quintas says this contributes to the existing congestion along that road.

He says the new route aims to provide a safer and more efficient alternative. The inbound buses will now exit the N2 freeway onto the M5 Black River Parkway, travel along the M5, and re-enter the city via the N1/FW de Klerk Boulevard.

 

From there, they will proceed to the Civic Centre station via Christiaan Barnard Street and Hertzog Boulevard.

 

“The new route alignment for the inbound buses may add additional travelling time for commuters using the N2 Express service.”

 

This route change applies only to inbound buses. Outbound buses travelling from the Civic Centre station towards Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain will continue using the N2 freeway.

 

Quintas anticipates that an adjustment period will be needed for commuters and drivers, but is confident that all will run smoothly in due course. He says similar deviations have been implemented successfully on the N2 inbound before.

 

 “We will monitor the impact of the change continuously and make further adjustments if needed.”

 

He says commuters can check the MyCiTi website or app for updated schedules or contact the Transport Information Centre on 0860 65 64 63 for further assistance.
