As schools reopened this week, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) revealed that nearly nine percent of South Africa’s 13.5 million school pupils reside in the province. This translates to approximately 1.2 million learners attending public schools across the region.

While some students are feeling nervous about the upcoming year, many are filled with excitement for the opportunities ahead. Smile 90.4 FM had the chance to meet nine-year-old Anicah Jacobs, a bright and eager grade four learner from Steenberg, who attends Floreat Primary School.

“I am so excited for the new school year. It is a new journey for me in Grade Four, and I am excited about all the new subjects and extramural activities,” Anicah shared with enthusiasm.

Aside from her academic interests, Anicah has a passion for singing and dancing. When asked about her future aspirations, the young learner confidently stated that her aim is to become a medical doctor when she is older.

“I would like to work hard and make my parents proud,” said Jacobs.

Anicah’s determination and excitement for the future are a reflection of the hopes and dreams of many learners in the Western Cape as they step into a new academic year full of potential and promise.
